・脳に電極を入れ、電気刺激したら意識が回復した

　事故などで脳を外傷し、最小意識状態が長く続いた患者の脳の「視床」という部位を電気で刺激することにより、意識レベルと行動の改善が見られたとの報告が雑誌ネイチャー』に掲載された。

　被験者になったのは6年以上前に脳を損傷した38歳の男性。最小意識状態とは、完全な植物状態ではなく、ものを見たり聞いたりするような反応が少しだけ見られるような状態である。

　この治療はおよそ500日にわたる長いものだった。まず初めに、視床に電気刺激のための電極を埋め込む手術を行う。この視床という部位は、脳全体の活動 性・反応性を制御し、信号を送っている大事な部位である。しかし視床は、脳の中でも深いところにあるため容易な手術ではなかったようである。

　その後、数十日リハビリを行ったが、特に脳機能に改善は見られなかった。
　ここから数日間、定期的な電気刺激を開始したところ、行動の劇的な改善が観察されたという。運動機能や会話能力などが特に顕著だったそうである。さらに 数週間の刺激を続けたところ、コップの水を飲めるほどにまで回復したという。さらには運動神経だけでなく、コミュニケーション能力も向上した。
